Pharmacy- a vital link in the chain of healthcare
Pharmacy is a health profession in which pharmacists provide care for their patients as one member of the health care team. This care focuses on the patient from the perspective of drug therapy. The pharmacist is responsible to identify, prevent and resolve patients' drug therapy problems. Specific activities include: taking medication histories, identifying goals for drug therapy, providing recommendations and education to patients regarding self-medication, providing recommendations to other health care providers on drug therapy, working with patients to maximize benefits and minimize adverse effects of drug therapy, maintaining patient drug profiles, counselling patients on prescribed medication, monitoring drug interactions, adverse drug reactions and patients compliance with drug treatment. Other activities include the provision of information on drugs to patients and other health professionals, the preparation of suitable materials for use as medicines from natural and synthetic sources, the compounding of drugs and the dispensing of suitable medication.
These pharmacists are frequently the first contact in the health care system and as such, are critical to ensuring that patients receive optimal drug therapy.
The pharmaceutical profession will have a considerable impact on science and health care during this decade and beyond. Students pursuing this course can look forward to a rewarding array of opportunities after completion. In this new era of health care, an emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The Bachelors degree in Pharmacy will help develop these essential skills and provide a strong foundation in the ever-growing field of pharmaceutical sciences.
Pharmacists today have more career choices than ever before. While dispensing medications is still a cornerstone practice area, pharmacists can carve out their own careers in a wide range of career opportunities. The majority enter community pharmacy practice. Hospital pharmacy also provides an interesting challenge for pharmacists, particularly in view of the expanding role within the clinical setting. The pharmaceutical industry provides opportunities for pharmacists in the fields of sales and marketing, production, research and quality control.
